Outbox Pattern

GoF Core ✓EnterpriseCloud & Craft

Enterprise · 2 — App patterns · ~6 min · Module 4: Enterprise Design Patterns

What is this?

Outbox writes domain data and an “event to publish” row in the same transaction; a relay publishes afterward.

Why should you care?

ShopNest must not commit an order then crash before emitting order_placed.

See it live — copy this example

Paste into a C# console or class library project and run dotnet run.

public sealed class PlaceOrderWithOutbox
{
    public void Execute()
    {
        // BEGIN TRAN (conceptual)
        Console.WriteLine("INSERT Orders");
        Console.WriteLine("INSERT Outbox(order_placed)");
        // COMMIT
    }
}
public sealed class OutboxRelay
{
    public void PublishPending() => Console.WriteLine("PUBLISH order_placed to bus");
}

new PlaceOrderWithOutbox().Execute();
new OutboxRelay().PublishPending();

What happened?

  • Atomic outbox + order removes dual-write bugs.
  • Relay is at-least-once; consumers must be idempotent.
  • Deeper reliability lesson expands this.

Practice next

  1. Sketch Orders + Outbox tables.
  2. Commit both together.
  3. Build a background relay.
  4. Add ProcessedAt column.
  5. Metric outbox lag age.

Remember

Transactional outbox. Async publish. Idempotent consumers.

ShopNest order_placed outbox

Place-order commits order+outbox together.

Outcome: No silent lost events after DB success.
