Minimal API Pattern

GoF Core ✓Enterprise ✓Cloud & Craft

Cloud & Craft · 3 — Microservices & interviews · ~10 min · Module 7: ASP.NET Core Architecture Patterns

What is this?

Minimal APIs map endpoints with thin lambdas/handlers — less ceremony than controllers for small services.

Why should you care?

ShopNest edge microservices can expose a few routes quickly without controller classes.

See it live — copy this example

Paste into a C# console or class library project and run dotnet run.

// var app = WebApplication.CreateBuilder(args).Build();
// app.MapPost("/orders", async (PlaceOrderCommand cmd, IMediator m) =>
//     Results.Ok(await m.Send(cmd)));
Console.WriteLine("MapPost /orders -> mediator.Send");

What happened?

  • MapGet/MapPost bind parameters and return IResult.
  • Still use DI, validation, and auth.
  • Controllers remain fine for large surface areas.

Practice next

  1. Create a minimal API project.
  2. Map a POST that sends MediatR.
  3. Add auth with RequireAuthorization.
  4. Return TypedResults.
  5. Add OpenAPI metadata.

Remember

Thin endpoint mapping. Still use DI/mediators. Great for small surfaces.

ShopNest inventory minimal API

Small stock service uses MapPost/MapGet.

Outcome: Fast to scaffold; logic stays in handlers.
