What is this?

Vitest is a fast test runner made for Vite projects — Jest-like API with native ESM support.

Why should you care?

Modern React/Vite apps often choose Vitest over Jest for speed.

See it live — copy this example

Paste into an HTML file or the browser console (F12). Use Run below when the live editor is available.

import { describe, it, expect } from "vitest";
import { formatINR } from "./format.js";

describe("formatINR", () => {
  it("shows rupee", () => {
    expect(formatINR(100)).toMatch(/₹|100/);
  });
});

Run Example »

Edit the code below and click Run to see the result in Toolliyo’s live editor.

What happened?

  • describe groups tests.
  • Vitest runs in parallel.
  • Works great with import syntax.

Practice next

  1. Install vitest in Vite project.
  2. Write describe/it with import syntax.
  3. Run vitest watch mode.
  4. Add @vitest/coverage-v8 and inspect HTML report.
  5. Compare test speed vs Jest on same suite.

Remember

Vite-native tests Jest-like API Fast watch mode

ScriptVerse Vite admin

New admin panel uses Vitest because native ESM matches Vite dev server without extra transforms.

Outcome: Vitest gives Jest-like DX with faster feedback in modern ScriptVerse stacks.
