What is this?
Amazon SQS is a managed message queue with standard (at-least-once) and FIFO (exactly-once, ordered) queues.
Why should you care?
AwsVerse payment posting queue smooths spikes and retries failed ledger writes safely.
See it live — copy this example
Run in AWS CloudShell / local AWS CLI v2, or follow the matching steps in the AWS Console (Free Tier).
aws sqs send-message \
--queue-url https://sqs.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com/123456789012/awsverse-payments \
--message-body '{"paymentId":"PAY-8821","amount":1500,"currency":"INR"}' \
--message-group-id payments \
--message-deduplication-id PAY-8821
What happened?
- Sends one message to a FIFO queue with deduplication ID preventing duplicates within five minutes.
- Follow the steps below — typing the code yourself is the fastest way to learn.
Practice next
- Create standard queue for lab.
- Send and receive messages via CLI.
- Attach DLQ with maxReceiveCount 3.
- Enable long polling WaitTimeSeconds=20.
- Compare standard vs FIFO cost for your volume.
Remember
SQS decouples producers and consumers. DLQ captures poison messages. FIFO when order matters.
AwsVerse payment buffer
Core banking API rate-limits at 100 TPS.
Outcome: SQS absorbs 500 TPS burst; workers drain at safe pace.
