What is this?
AWS CodeBuild compiles source code, runs tests, and produces deploy artifacts in managed build containers defined by buildspec.yml.
Why should you care?
AwsVerse builds Docker images and runs unit tests on every pull request automatically.
See it live — copy this example
Run in AWS CloudShell / local AWS CLI v2, or follow the matching steps in the AWS Console (Free Tier).
version: 0.2
phases:
pre_build:
commands:
- aws ecr get-login-password | docker login --username AWS --password-stdin $ECR_URI
build:
commands:
- docker build -t $ECR_URI:$CODEBUILD_RESOLVED_SOURCE_VERSION .
- docker push $ECR_URI:$CODEBUILD_RESOLVED_SOURCE_VERSION
What happened?
- Buildspec logs into ECR, builds the Docker image tagged with commit hash, and pushes to registry for ECS deployment.
- Follow the steps below — typing the code yourself is the fastest way to learn.
Practice next
- Add buildspec.yml to repo root.
- Create CodeBuild project pointing at buildspec.
- Run build; check CloudWatch logs for errors.
- Enable local Docker layer cache.
- Add post_build phase with ecs update-service.
Remember
CodeBuild = managed CI runner. buildspec.yml defines phases. Push artifacts to S3 or ECR.
AwsVerse image factory
Twenty microservices need identical build steps.
Outcome: Shared buildspec template cuts build time 40%.
