Regions & AZs

Core servicesProjects

Core services · 1 — AWS basics · ~6 min · AWS — Foundations

What is this?

A Region is a geographic area with multiple isolated Availability Zones (AZs). AZs are separate data centers with low-latency links for high availability.

Why should you care?

AwsVerse deploys multi-AZ RDS and ALB in ap-south-1 so one AZ failure does not take down banking APIs.

See it live — copy this example

Run in AWS CloudShell / local AWS CLI v2, or follow the matching steps in the AWS Console (Free Tier).

aws ec2 describe-availability-zones \
  --region ap-south-1 \
  --query "AvailabilityZones[].{Name:ZoneName,Id:ZoneId,State:State}" \
  --output table

What happened?

  • Lists AZ names and state in Mumbai region.
  • Pick at least two AZs when designing subnets and load balancers.

Practice next

  1. Open EC2 → Account attributes → Supported Zones.
  2. Note your default region in the console top bar.
  3. Plan subnets spanning two AZs before launching RDS.
  4. Compare AZ count in us-east-1 vs your home region.
  5. Launch two t3.micro in different AZs (terminate after).

Remember

Region = geography; AZ = isolated DC. Multi-AZ for production HA. Some services are region-locked once created.

AwsVerse Mumbai HA

Payment API must survive single-AZ outage.

Outcome: ALB across ap-south-1a and ap-south-1b keeps traffic flowing.
