What is this?
An Amazon Machine Image is a template for EC2 instances: OS, patches, and optional baked-in apps. You can copy and share AMIs across regions.
Why should you care?
AwsVerse golden AMIs pass CIS benchmarks before any banking workload launches.
See it live — copy this example
Run in AWS CloudShell / local AWS CLI v2, or follow the matching steps in the AWS Console (Free Tier).
aws ec2 create-image \
--instance-id i-0abc123 \
--name 'awsverse-amazonlinux-hardened-20260720' \
--no-reboot \
--description 'CIS Level 1 baseline'
What happened?
- Snapshots attached EBS volumes into a new AMI from a running instance.
- Launch future instances from this image for consistency.
Practice next
- Launch base Amazon Linux instance; apply patches.
- Run hardening script; create AMI.
- Launch test instance from new AMI; validate.
- Copy AMI to us-east-1 with ec2 copy-image.
- Share AMI with another account ID.
Remember
AMI = EC2 boot template. Golden AMI for compliance. Copy AMIs to DR region.
AwsVerse golden image
Auditor requires identical OS baseline.
Outcome: All prod EC2 launch from one approved AMI monthly rebuild.
