Auto Scaling
Core services → Projects
Core services · 1 — AWS basics · ~6 min · AWS — Compute Services
What is this?
Auto Scaling adjusts EC2 or ECS capacity based on metrics, schedules, or target tracking. It replaces unhealthy instances automatically.
Why should you care?
AwsVerse SaaS handles Monday login spikes without manual capacity planning.
See it live — copy this example
Run in AWS CloudShell / local AWS CLI v2, or follow the matching steps in the AWS Console (Free Tier).
aws autoscaling create-auto-scaling-group \
--auto-scaling-group-name awsverse-api-asg \
--launch-template LaunchTemplateName=awsverse-api-lt,Version='$Latest' \
--min-size 2 --max-size 6 --desired-capacity 2 \
--vpc-zone-identifier 'subnet-1a,subnet-1b' \
--target-group-arns arn:aws:elasticloadbalancing:ap-south-1:123:targetgroup/api/abc
What happened?
- Creates an ASG spanning two subnets registered to an ALB target group.
- Pair with a scaling policy on CPU or request count.
Practice next
- Create launch template with AMI and SG.
- Create ASG with min 1 max 3 for lab.
- Add target tracking policy on CPU 50%.
- Add scheduled scale-up for business hours.
- Use ELB health checks instead of EC2 status.
Remember
ASG = elastic EC2 fleet. Multi-AZ for HA. Policies drive scale in/out.
AwsVerse payday scale
Banking traffic 5x on salary day.
Outcome: ASG adds four instances; scale-in after peak saves cost.
