What is this?
Mongoose is the ODM library connecting Node/Express to MongoDB with schemas, models, validation, and middleware for MeanVerse.
Why should you care?
Raw driver works but Mongoose adds structure, defaults, and TypeScript-friendly models.
See it live — copy this example
Paste into your MeanVerse project (Angular + Express + MongoDB), then run with ng serve / node / mongosh as noted.
const accountSchema = new Schema({
tenantId: { type: String, required: true, index: true },
name: { type: String, required: true, trim: true },
balanceCents: { type: Number, default: 0, min: 0 },
currency: { type: String, enum: ['USD', 'EUR', 'INR'], default: 'USD' }
}, { timestamps: true });
accountSchema.methods.formatBalance = function() {
return (this.balanceCents / 100).toFixed(2);
};
export const Account = model('Account', accountSchema);
What happened?
- Schema defines types and validators.
- timestamps adds createdAt/updatedAt.
- methods adds instance helpers.
- model() compiles schema to collection accounts.
Practice next
- Define schema with required fields and enums.
- Connect mongoose once at startup.
- Use Model.find/create in Express routes.
- Add virtual populate for account owner user.
- Use discriminators for Checking vs Savings types.
Remember
Mongoose = schemas + models on MongoDB. Validation at schema level complements API Zod. Middleware hooks for audit and soft delete.
Healthcare patient model
Patient schema enforces enum gender and required MRN.
Outcome: Invalid records rejected before insert — HIPAA data quality.
