What is this?

Apollo Client connects Angular to GraphQL — cache, queries, mutations — while Apollo Server serves the MeanVerse schema.

Why should you care?

Apollo normalizes cache so updating transfer list reflects in account detail without refetch all.

See it live — copy this example

Paste into your MeanVerse project (Angular + Express + MongoDB), then run with ng serve / node / mongosh as noted.

// Angular main.ts
provideApollo(() => {
  const http = inject(HttpLink);
  return {
    link: ApolloLink.from([
      setContext((_op, { headers }) => ({
        headers: { ...headers, authorization: `Bearer ${auth.token()}` }
      })),
      http.create({ uri: '/graphql' })
    ]),
    cache: new InMemoryCache()
  };
});

// component
readonly account = inject(AccountGqlService).watchQuery({
  query: gql`query Account($id: ID!) { account(id: $id) { name balance transfers(limit: 3) { amount } } }`,
  variables: { id: this.routeId }
});

What happened?

  • HttpLink sends GraphQL POST.
  • InMemoryCache stores entities by id.
  • watchQuery updates UI when cache merges mutation results.

Practice next

  1. ng add apollo-angular.
  2. Configure link with auth interceptor pattern.
  3. Generate types from schema with graphql-codegen.
  4. Add optimistic response on transfer mutation.
  5. Use fetchPolicy cache-and-network for dashboard.

Remember

Apollo Client = GraphQL + normalized cache. Integrates with Angular DI and signals. Pair with Apollo Server on Express.

SaaS admin explorer

Admin browses tenant users and subscriptions linked in one graph.

Outcome: Apollo cache links User to Subscription — navigation feels instant.
