Installing SSMS
SQL basics → Queries → Advanced
SQL basics · 1 — SELECT · ~6 min · SQL — Foundations
What is this?
SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is the free GUI to write T-SQL, browse objects, and manage backups. It is separate from the engine — install both.
Why should you care?
Beginners learn faster when they can see tables in Object Explorer and press F5 to run scripts.
See it live — copy this example
Run in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) or Azure Data Studio.
-- In a New Query window after connecting
SELECT name AS DatabaseName
FROM sys.databases
ORDER BY name;
PRINT N'SSMS is connected and running T-SQL.';
What happened?
- Any successful query means SSMS reached the engine.
- PRINT writes a message to the Messages tab — handy for smoke tests.
Practice next
- Download and install the latest SSMS from Microsoft.
- Connect → Database Engine → your instance.
- Open New Query, paste the example, press F5.
- Enable “Include Actual Execution Plan” and run SELECT 1;
- Save the script as 01-smoke-test.sql in a practice folder.
Remember
SSMS is the client IDE for SQL Server. F5 runs the selected batch. Object Explorer mirrors databases and tables.
DBA reviews a stuck job in SSMS
Ops opens Activity Monitor in SSMS during a DataVerse incident.
Outcome: They spot a blocked session and kill the long transaction safely.
