Logical Operators

Foundations & CRUD ✓Queries & SchemaAggregation & ScaleAtlas & Projects

Queries & Schema · 2 — Design · ~6 min · MongoDB — Query Operators

What is this?

Logical operators combine conditions: $and, $or, $nor, and $not. Top-level fields are already AND; use $or when any condition may match.

Why should you care?

Search boxes often mean “title matches OR tags match”. Fraud rules may require AND of several signals.

See it live — copy this example

Open mongosh or MongoDB Compass, select database nosqlverse, then run the example. Change one field and run again.

db.posts.insertMany([
  { title: "Mongo tips", tags: ["db"], published: true },
  { title: "Travel diary", tags: ["life"], published: true },
  { title: "Draft atlas", tags: ["db"], published: false }
])
db.posts.find({
  $and: [
    { published: true },
    { $or: [ { tags: "db" }, { title: /atlas/i } ] }
  ]
})

Result

What happened?

  • Outer $and requires published true.
  • Inner $or allows tag db or title containing atlas.
  • Only “Mongo tips” matches.
  • The draft fails published; travel fails both or-branches.

Practice next

  1. Insert the three posts.
  2. Run the $and/$or query.
  3. Flip published on the draft and re-run.
  4. Add $or on authorId for two friends’ feeds.
  5. Use $not: { $gte: 10 } on a likes field.

Remember

Default multi-field filters are AND. $or means any condition may match. $and makes grouping explicit.

Agents find tickets where status is open AND (priority high OR customer is enterprise).

Outcome: Queue shows the urgent slice without missing enterprise flags.
