Config Servers

Foundations & CRUD ✓Queries & Schema ✓Aggregation & ScaleAtlas & Projects

Aggregation & Scale · 3 — Pipelines · ~10 min · MongoDB — Replication & Sharding

What is this?

Config servers are a dedicated replica set that stores sharding metadata — chunk ranges, shard connection strings, and balancer settings. Without them, mongos cannot route.

Why should you care?

If metadata is wrong or unavailable, the whole sharded cluster misroutes. Treating config servers as critical infrastructure prevents cluster-wide outages.

See it live — copy this example

Open mongosh or MongoDB Compass, select database nosqlverse, then run the example. Change one field and run again.

// Connect to mongos, inspect metadata (do not casually edit)
db.getSiblingDB("config").shards.find().pretty()
db.getSiblingDB("config").collections.find().limit(5)
db.getSiblingDB("config").chunks.find({ ns: "NoSQLVerse.readings" }).limit(3)
sh.status()

What happened?

  • The config database holds shards, collections, and chunks.
  • sh.status reads that metadata.
  • You operate config servers as a replica set with the same care as data-bearing nodes — backups included.

Practice next

  1. On a sharded lab, list config.shards.
  2. Find chunk documents for one namespaced collection.
  3. Confirm config servers are a 3-member replica set in architecture diagrams.
  4. Map which Atlas tier manages config servers for you.
  5. Read balancer settings via sh.getBalancerState().

Remember

Config servers store cluster metadata. mongos reads them to route. Run them as a durable replica set.

Cluster control plane

Ops monitors config RS health as strictly as data shards.

Outcome: Routing stays correct during shard maintenance.
