Backup & Restore

Foundations & CRUD ✓Queries & Schema ✓Aggregation & Scale ✓Atlas & Projects

Atlas & Projects · 4 — Build · ~10 min · MongoDB — Atlas & Security

What is this?

Backups copy your data so you can restore after mistakes, corruption, or ransomware. Atlas offers cloud backups and point-in-time restore; self-managed uses filesystem snapshots or mongodump/mongorestore.

Why should you care?

dropDatabase happens. Ransomware happens. Without tested restores, backups are fiction.

See it live — copy this example

Open mongosh or MongoDB Compass, select database nosqlverse, then run the example. Change one field and run again.

// Logical dump/restore (self-managed / flexible)
// mongodump --uri="mongodb://localhost:27017" --db=NoSQLVerse --out=/backups/nv
// mongorestore --uri="mongodb://localhost:27017" --drop /backups/nv/NoSQLVerse
// Verify:
use NoSQLVerse
db.getCollectionNames()
db.users.countDocuments({})

Run Example »

Edit the code below and click Run to see the result in Toolliyo’s live editor.

What happened?

  • mongodump writes BSON exports per collection.
  • mongorestore loads them; --drop replaces existing collections.
  • Always verify counts after restore.
  • Atlas UI restores are preferred for managed clusters.

Practice next

  1. Take a dump of your database.
  2. Delete a practice collection intentionally.
  3. Restore and confirm documents return.
  4. Dump a single collection with --collection.
  5. Restore into NoSQLVerse_restored to compare.

Remember

Backups enable recovery. Practice restores, not only dumps. Atlas PITR covers many ops needs.

Accidental collection drop

An engineer drops posts on prod; Atlas restore to a moment before the drop saves the day.

Outcome: Minutes of data loss instead of years of content gone.
