Find Queries

Foundations & CRUDQueries & SchemaAggregation & ScaleAtlas & Projects

Foundations & CRUD · 1 — Documents · ~6 min · MongoDB — CRUD Operations

What is this?

find returns a cursor of documents matching a filter. An empty filter {} matches all. You chain sort, limit, and project. findOne returns a single document or null.

Why should you care?

Every product list, order history, and user lookup is a find. Getting filters right is the heart of MongoDB reading.

See it live — copy this example

Open mongosh or MongoDB Compass, select database nosqlverse, then run the example. Change one field and run again.

db.products.insertMany([
  { name: "Laptop Sleeve", price: 799, category: "accessories" },
  { name: "Laptop Stand", price: 1899, category: "accessories" },
  { name: "SSD 1TB", price: 5499, category: "storage" }
])
db.products.find({ category: "accessories", price: { $lte: 2000 } })
db.products.findOne({ name: "SSD 1TB" })

Run Example »

Edit the code below and click Run to see the result in Toolliyo’s live editor.

Code
Result

What happened?

  • The filter requires category accessories AND price ≤ 2000.
  • find returns both sleeve and stand.
  • findOne returns the SSD document only.
  • Comparison operators live inside the filter object.

Practice next

  1. Insert the sample products if needed.
  2. Run the accessories find and count the results.
  3. Run find({}) and note it returns everything.
  4. Find price: { $gte: 1000 }.
  5. Add .limit(1) on the cursor in mongosh.

Remember

find filters documents. Combine fields for AND conditions. findOne is for a single expected match.

Amazon-like category browse

Shoppers open Accessories under ₹2000. The API runs the same filter shape as the example.

Outcome: Only matching products render in the grid.
