Reverse Proxy Deep Dive

BasicsScaleInterview

Basics · 1 — Building blocks · ~6 min · Module 2: Networking and Traffic Management

What is this?

A reverse proxy sits in front of origin servers — TLS, compression, request buffering, and routing — often Nginx/Envoy/Traefik.

Why should you care?

ShopNest APIs should not terminate messy internet TLS and HTTP quirks on every app process.

See it live — copy this example

Sketch the architecture on paper. These lessons focus on concepts and trade-offs.

Internet → Nginx/Envoy → Order API
                      ↘ Catalog API

Proxy duties: TLS certs, gzip, timeouts, request size limits, canary header routing

Run Example »

This lesson uses terminal or setup steps. Run commands on your computer — the live editor appears on coding lessons.

What happened?

  • Unlike a pure L4 LB mindset, reverse proxies speak HTTP deeply.
  • They centralize cross-cutting edge concerns so app code stays thinner.

Practice next

  1. List three duties to push to the proxy.
  2. Set a max body size for upload APIs.
  3. Configure upstream timeouts separately from app timeouts.
  4. Add path-based routing /v2 to new catalog.
  5. Enable access logs with request IDs.

Remember

Reverse proxy = HTTP edge brain. Centralize TLS and limits. Keep upstream timeouts intentional.

Envoy at ShopNest edge

Envoy terminates TLS and routes by path.

Outcome: Services behind it speak plain HTTP on the mesh network.
