Data Replication for Storage

Basics ✓ScaleInterview

Scale · 2 — Distributed · ~6 min · Module 4: Caching and Storage

What is this?

Storage replication copies blobs/blocks across disks, racks, or regions for durability and read locality.

Why should you care?

Losing ShopNest invoice PDFs to one disk failure is unacceptable.

See it live — copy this example

Sketch the architecture on paper. These lessons focus on concepts and trade-offs.

Object store: 3× replicate within region (provider-managed)
Cross-region replica for DR invoices
RPO: async region copy may lag minutes
App reads nearest region replica for catalogs

Run Example »

This lesson uses terminal or setup steps. Run commands on your computer — the live editor appears on coding lessons.

What happened?

  • Providers replicate under the hood; you still choose cross-region DR and understand RPO.
  • Durability is not the same as application-level backup of metadata.

Practice next

  1. Enable cross-region replication for critical ShopNest invoices.
  2. State RPO for media vs ledger DB separately.
  3. Test restore of a deleted object version.
  4. Turn on object versioning for invoices.
  5. Exclude disposable temp uploads from CRR.

Remember

Replication raises durability. Know regional RPO. Versioning helps recover from deletes.

Invoice DR copy

ShopNest replicates invoice bucket to a second region.

Outcome: Region loss does not erase tax documents.
