Docker for System Design

Basics ✓ScaleInterview

Scale · 2 — Distributed · ~6 min · Module 6: Cloud-Native Architecture

What is this?

Docker packages an app and its dependencies into an image so every environment runs the same bits.

Why should you care?

ShopNest “works on my machine” dies when Order API ships as a container image promoted through environments.

See it live — copy this example

Sketch the architecture on paper. These lessons focus on concepts and trade-offs.

Dockerfile → image shopnest/orders:1.8
Run: container listens :8080
Compose (dev): orders + postgres + redis
Prod: orchestrator runs many replicas of the same image

Run Example »

This lesson uses terminal or setup steps. Run commands on your computer — the live editor appears on coding lessons.

What happened?

  • Images are immutable artifacts.
  • Tag by version.
  • Keep containers stateless; put state in databases and volumes designed for it.

Practice next

  1. Containerize ShopNest Order API.
  2. Tag with semver, not only latest.
  3. Use compose for local dependencies.
  4. Multi-stage build to shrink the image.
  5. Scan images for CVEs in CI.

Remember

Image = reproducible runtime. Stateless app containers. Version tags matter.

Same image staging→prod

ShopNest promotes orders:1.8 after tests.

Outcome: Fewer environment drift bugs.
